Make Your Resume Stand Up

It is a well-known truth that looking for a job can be challenging, so we must start thinking strategically about how we can get the attention of the recruiters. First, let’s make sure your resume stands out from the rest. How can we make a resume ‘special’? The rule of thumb when it comes to building a resume is that a resume should not be longer than a page unless you have more than ten years of experience.

For professionals in the Financial Services industry, it is always recommended to use Time New Roman as your font. The characteristics of this font make it easy to read through and scan. When building your resume, you must keep it in mind to make it easy for the eyes.

The organization is everything on a resume. Job titles should always be aligned to the left and dates to the right. When it comes to organizing your working experience, make sure you start from the latest job experience to your oldest position held. The description of the role should always be in bullet points. If you add four bullet points to one job, you will have to add four bullet points to all job descriptions making it symmetrical. The positions held in the past should always start with the verb in the past tense, and your current job should begin with the action verb in the present. Make sure you use action verbs (direct, lead, supervise, etc.) to describe the roles.

It is true companies nowadays use SEO (search engine automation) to look for resumes. But how do SEO's work? For example, suppose XYZ company is looking for an accountant with QuickBooks experience. In that case, the recruiter will go to the company resume database and look at the keyword ‘QuickBooks.’ Resumes that have the keyword will show in the search. Of course, tailoring a resume for every position is a full-time job. However, consider tailoring your resume to the positions that matter the most to you.
